DJ - A COLLECTION OF DJ PORTRAITS by Krijn van Noordwijk
24 Oct 2008With over 140 full colour studio portraits of DJ's from all over the world, photographer Krijn van Noordwijk honours today's musical hero. Most of the time, your average person in an audience only catches a glimpse of the artist, standing behind a pair of decks on a vast distant stage. Now his book is showing some of the personalities close up, in more than one sense. It puts an icon to the idol.
All portraits are shot in a classical way, technically speaking. But the expressions and emotions of the subjects are rather contemporary. Van Noordwijk spent over two years of DJ hunting to create his unique collection of some of the world's best-known and most talented DJ's. Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, Sven Väth, Derrick May, Tommie Sunshine and Juan Atkins are just some of the names that go with the faces in this book. Krijn's idiosyncratic style of portrait photography makes this collection a true tribute to the DJ.
The book is for sale at www.djthebook.com.
ON THE ROAD by Bert Teunissen in bookstores
22 Oct 2008Bert Teunissen's new book ON THE ROAD. A DOMESTIC LANDSCAPES TRAVELOG is distributed in a limited edition at a number of bookstores. At both Athenaeum Boekhandel (Spui, Amsterdam) and Nijhof & Lee (Staalstraat, Amsterdam) ON THE ROAD is on display in the window. The book is an offset printed tabloid (80 pages, 26.5 x 32.5 cm), rolled up and bound together with a black ribbon with white text and comes in a custom made cardboard box.
"During the 12 years of travelling for the project Domestic Landscapes, I have made many b/w snapshots of people, things and situations that captured my eye. From these images I created travelogs, small photo-diaries in which I express my personal feelings, thoughts and reactions to the numerous impressions I get when doing these travels. When I return home I edit the hundreds of images into little booklets that give a personal impression of that trip.
Sometimes the story is very illustrative, other times it is pure abstract. As an introduction to these travelogs I have produced one that focuses entirely on the travelling. All my travels are by car and so far I have driven over 50.000 km's for the project. Many times I made a snapshot from behind the steering wheel of the road ahead. This series became the first travelog and is called ON THE ROAD."
IMPASSE gets Special Mention Best International Short Film at IAFF
20 Oct 2008Last Sunday, Bram Schouw's short film IMPASSE got a Special Mention in the category Best International Short Film at the International Amsterdam Film Festival. IMPASSE was also nominated in the category Best Dutch Short Film.
The jury, consisting of Yaël Vinckx, Jonathan Rudnick en Nina Köll about IMPASSE: "To tell a simple story in a non-simplifying, subtle way is one of the most difficult things for a story-teller - IMPASSE is a beautiful example of exactly that. Intriguing and convincing characters, a clear, strong story line that still invites the viewer for interpretations, and the choice to avoid dialogue makes it a very strong film."
IMPASSE is part of STORIES ON HUMAN RIGHTS, a film produced by the World Cinema Foundation and the United Nations. This feature film, existing of 23 short films from directors as Hany Abu-Assad, Walter Salles and Sergei Bodrov, will have it's world premiere at the Berlinale 2009. TOKKELOSHE receives Honourable Mention Shocking Shorts
29 Sep 2008Billy Pols' short film TOKKELOSHE got an Honourable Mention at the Shocking Shorts Awards, presented at the Dutch Film Festival.
The jury consists of among others Rutger Hauer, Monique van de Ven and Jean van de Velde. From the jury-report:
'The quality of TOKKELOSHE was considered on all levels to be outstanding, however our programming team found it very difficult to categorize the film. Due to the almost documentary-style of the film they felt it did not fall within the realms of either the SCI FI or Crime & Thriller genres. Consequently TOKKELOSHE was not nominated, but we loved it so much that we would like to give it an Honourable Mention.'
